Smart’s mother crashed cars, attempted suicide, beat up the maid, extinguished cigarettes on herself, had hysterical rages, and eventually kidnapped the author's daughter. All this insanity is told against the backdrop of South Africa during the end-of-apartheid era; a time when the entire country was going insane.
