Synopsis:  “Hell Camp” is an award winning memoir written in a fast paced style with plenty of humor to help steer through the oft times brutal childhood of the author, Niki Smart. Growing up with a mother suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, meant that Smart’s childhood home, (aptly dubbed “Hell Camp” by her younger brother), was chaotic, violent, warped and flat out crazy. Smart’s mother crashed cars, attempted suicide, beat up the maid, extinguished cigarettes on herself, had hysterical rages, and eventually kidnapped the author's daughter. All this insanity is told against the backdrop of South Africa during the end-of-apartheid era; a time when the entire country was going insane. Moving through the mayhem and madness, the author arrives at a place of forgiveness and understanding granting the reader an uplifting ending and entertaining read.

Gaining high praise from readers, Hell Camp has been described as “Lacerating, raw, honest, and brave” by Wesley Strick, screenwriter of The Glass House; Cape Fear; Wolf; Nightmare on Elm Street. And John Parenti, creative counsel to Pulitzer winning author, JR Moehringer, and to tennis legend, Andre Agassi, had this to say about Hell Camp: "The most riveting, turbulent and redemptive literary ride since The Glass Castle; Smart has more than a compelling story, beyond stormy, it's so unbelievable, it must be true. She has the gift of expression. Like stones, you can feel her roll the words around in her hand and rearrange them for your pleasure. Pick this book up. This is a read that has no rivals”
